Diabetic Shoe Program  |  Non-Diabetic Shoe Program

Diabetic Shoe Program

Dr. Licandro has a strong interest in diabetes and the best treatment protocol for his patients with diabetes. For sometime now, diabetic foot wound infections has been one of the leading causes of hospital admissions and accounts for a high percentage of the reason for lower extremity amputations. There are approximately 16 million people in the United States who have diabetes, with over 5 million of whom are completely unaware they have this disease. Each day, over 2,000 people are newly diagnosed with diabetes.

In order to help combat this growing disease, in 1993, Medicare approved a therapeutic footwear program for people with diabetes. The program was designed for people with diabetes to be fitted with proper shoe gear and inserts to help not only provide proper fitting shoes, but also to help off load pressure spots in shoes that sometimes lead to corns or calluses. These diabetic patients can qualify for one pair of shoes and three pairs of custom inserts per calendar year. Medicare pays 80% of the total cost. If the patient has a secondary insurance, there is no cost to the patient.

Under the Medicare guidelines, the patient needs to be seeing a physician on a regular basis for diabetes in order to qualify for the program. This physician will be sent a certification form to be signed so that Medicare will cover these specifically approved shoes and inserts.

Dr. Jim is a Board Certified Wound Care Specialist. With the increase in diabetes in the United States, diabetic foot care and wound care has become an invaluable field in terms of proper treatment protocol. His Bettendorf practice is comprised of a high percentage of patients diagnosed with diabetes. Dr. Licandro received extensive wound care training while doing a medical/surgical residency program in the heart of downtown Chicago. It was at the V.A. hospital that he was able to see and treat a wide variety of wound problems that are not commonly seen in the QC area.

Area Wide Foot and Ankle Center has the approved shoes and inserts. The doctor or one of our highly trained staff will fit you for these therapeutic shoes. Our office completes all the necessary paper work and insurance for this highly effective program.

As you may not be familiar with Dr. Licandro, he is a Board Certified Wound Care Specialist and is a member of the American Diabetic Association Educator Program. He is also Board Certified in Podiatric Primary Medical Care and Podiatric Surgery.

Please contact us with any questions you may have about this very beneficial program for people who suffer from diabetes.

Non-Diabetic Shoe Program

A wide variety of shoes are available at Area Wide Foot and Ankle Center for the non-diabetic patient as well. Shoes are available in both men's and women's and range from a dress shoe to running/walking shoes. In our program, a foam impression is taken of both feet and sent off to the shoe company. The shoe company properly sizes the length of your foot, width of your forefoot (toes) and heel. In this manner, a properly fitting shoe is most readily assured. Even the most expensive shoe can result in pain, discomfort and trauma to your foot if it is not properly fitted. Since the shoes come from the manufacturer, every size, in every width is available. No appointment is needed and the shoe display is readily available in the waiting room. One of our highly trained staff will be happy to assist you with any questions you may have and also with obtaining the proper foot impressions to be sent off to the shoe company. Your shoes will be delivered to your home.
