It was Dr. Licandro's dream to start a private practice rather than to buy an existing practice. Area Wide Foot and Ankle Center was opened November 1, 1999. Dr. Jim and Jeannine rented 1,000 square feet of space in Bettendorf for their office. With the help of some friends, they took down all of the walls, ceiling, and scraped off carpeting glued to the concrete floor. With a design in mind, they rebuilt in the space an office with a waiting area, reception office, two treatment rooms, billing office, and the doctor's office. There is a space provided for the X-ray machine plus a room for sterilizing equipment and developing the X-rays. Dr. Jim did much of the work himself (Just ask to see the first door he hung!). As the building was in the process, they started purchasing everything that was needed to open the doors and offer services. Everything from surgical instruments to Band-Aids; office paper to copy machines; paper towels to computers; furniture to computer programs. The office now has seven computers that Dr. Licandro built and networked together. He is often busy updating computers and solving problems. Jeannine designs and produces all of the patient forms, office forms, business cards, and stationary. Then, there were all of the federal tax forms, state tax forms, business and legal requirements to meet. All of the building plans also needed to meet handicapped requirements. Then on November 1, 1999; Area Wide Foot and Ankle Center was opened with no patients. That is where our success started.
